Guangzhou Medical University (GMU), formerly known as Guangzhou Medical College, was founded in 1958, is a medical institution that offers a full range of programs at undergraduate and graduate levels.
Guangzhou Medical University has two main campuses. The Yuexiu campus is located in the downtown center of Guangzhou City. Still, the 2nd campus, a medical campus, is far from Guangzhou City, and it takes about 2 hours to get there by Metro Bus.
Global Accreditations:
Guangzhou Medical University is recognized by the WHO (World Health Organization), WDOMS, WFME, and ECFMG. It is one of the MOE Listed Universities in China, allowed by the Ministry of Education of China to teach the Medicine Program (MBBS) in English Medium.
Foreign graduates who receive a medical degree (MBBS) from Guangzhou Medical University are eligible to apply for the Medical licensing examinations of USMLE, UKMLA/PLAB, and GMC, AMC, SMLE, and DHA to practice medicine worldwide.
MOE-Listed University:
In 2010, the Ministry of Education (MOE) of China listed Guangzhou Medical University (GMU) as one of 45 medical institutions that recruit international students for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programs in the English language.
The clinical medicine discipline of GMU is ranked in the top 1% in the world for ESI rankings (Essential Science Indicators).
Faculty and Students:
Guangzhou Medical University has 23,300 students studying full-time, including 10,000 undergraduates, 1,300 graduate students, and 12,000 continuing education students. Approximately 1,500 undergraduates and 550 postgraduates (master’s and doctoral) enroll from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau each year.
International Students:
International students are mainly from Bangladesh and India, and a few are from Pakistan and African countries: Cameroon, Ghana, Tanzania, Uganda, Sudan, Zambia, and Lesotho. Currently, around 280 International students are studying in the Clinical Medicine (MBBS) Program.
Clinical Medicine (MBBS) Cost:
Guangzhou Medical University started the Clinical Medicine (MBBS) Program for international students in 2010. The Tuition cost of a Clinical Medicine (MBBS) is 30,000 RMB/year ($4200) per year, and accommodation costs are 6000 RMB ($850) for the Panyu campus. If we calculate the total annual cost of tuition and accommodation, it comes to 36,000 RMB ($5,100).
The monthly average expenditure on food ranges from 1200 RMB to 1500 RMB, which is rather high compared to other medical schools in China.
The MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) Program fee for Pakistani Students is approximately 15 Lakh PKR per year. This cost excludes food expenses, laundry, books, Internet Bills, electricity, water, and traveling expenses.

MBBS Degree:
Guangzhou Medical University offers a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree. The Clinical Medicine Program (English taught) lasts six years, consisting of a five-year medicine study and the last year (6th) of an internship in the affiliated hospital of Guangzhou Medical University.

Admission Requirements:
Guangzhou Medical University does not require an entrance examination, and foreign students worldwide are eligible for the Medicine (MBBS) Program if they satisfy the following specified admission requirements.
- The Applicant’s passport must be valid for a minimum of one year.
- Students must have a minimum of 70% grades in Senior High School/WAEC/A-Levels/HSSC.
- Students between 18 and 25 are eligible to apply for the Bachelor’s of Medicine (MBBS) at Guangzhou Medical University.
- Students must be healthy and fluent in the English language.
- Documents should be translated into English or Chinese.
- Students from non-English-speaking countries will provide an English proficiency letter or IELTS/TOEFL.
Application Deadline:
The deadline to apply for the Medicine Program (MBBS) at Guangzhou Medical University is the 30th of October every year. Acceptance will be prioritized for applicants who submit their applications in advance.
